Director of Music | Joe Lewis
Joe Lewis has been here at Grace since 2014. His late wife, Wendy, was one of our song leaders until her passing in 2016. Joe basically "plays anything with a keyboard except the accordion. Have to draw the line somewhere!" Joe has been playing piano since the 50's and pipe organ since the mid-60's. His experience is ranges from extremely traditional to hardcore contemporary. From roughly 1991 through early 2006, Joe was Associate Organist at First Presbyterian Church of Maitland, Florida. At various times he was also Director of Technical Arts, 8:00 a.m. service organist, a keyboards player for the Contemporary service from it's inception, accompanist for the Chancel Choir, and Technical Director for the "Living Room," a very contemporary Christian outreach service, with live in-house Christian rock band, drama, full theatrical lighting, and a coffeehouse atmosphere. Joe played handbells at FPCMaitland for 25 years and was the Webmaster for the FPCMaitland web site.
From early 2006 through mid-2012, Joe was Director of Music and Organist at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Casselberry.
Joe was the accompanist for the Maitland Youth Community Choir through 2008, a member of the professional handbell choir, and principal organist and keyboards player for the Maitland Symphony Orchestra.
Joe has been guest organist at numerous churches in Central Florida, has composed a number of piano arrangements of old familiar hymns (including Amazing Grace, Lord, I Want to Be a Christian, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Sweet Hour of Prayer, Kum By Yah, Rock of Ages, and a number of Christmas carols), and has also composed a number of original pieces including one for handbell choir. In March of 2000, Joe was a member of a church mission team to Merida, Mexico, (in the Yucatan), and was the accompanist for a church service at Mission Esmirna in Samihil, Yuc. In March of 2001, Joe was the accompanist and piano/keyboards soloist, for a Presbyterian Choir tour of Brazil, with performances in Londrina and Foz do Iguacu, and in Cathedrals in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. He has also played Sunday services as a visiting organist in the Bahamas.
Now, Joe is our Director of Music and Congregational Accompanist, and has been since he came to Grace Church. We are grateful for him and his vast musical expertise as he helps us to sing songs, hymns, and spiritual songs to our Lord and Savior!
Joe holds a B.A. degree in Psychology from Florida Technological University, a B.A. degree in Legal Studies with a Minor in Statistics from the University of Central Florida, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida College of Law.
